"Respect is frequently lost in our society. In person — and especially online — snark and sarcasm often rule. Talking down to someone or insulting one another is the new norm. For adults and for kids, respect is often nowhere to be found.

No longer does society at large use terms like "sir" and "ma’am" when speaking to a stranger. Addressing elders with terms of esteem is rare as well. And having respect for authority seems to have gone out of style long ago.

Today’s digital world has taken this to a new level with many opportunities to use our words online. It has become commonplace to sling opinions on a screen, whether on social media or while leaving a comment on a blog post. And unfortunately, sometimes these comments and thoughts aren’t tucked in an envelope of respect. They are laced with cynicism, mockery or disdain.

However, today’s key verse talks about respect. And not just respecting those in authority, like a police officer, a judge, the president or governor. It goes so far as to say that we are to respect everyone.

Everyone.

Does this mean the grumpy neighbors who constantly let their dog run around your yard and occasionally use it as an outhouse? Yes.

Does it include your combative relative who never speaks respectfully to you? Yes.

What about the difficult person on that committee with you, whose personality and behavior get on your very last nerve? Yep. That one, too.

We can learn to speak respectfully no matter the situation. By drawing on the power of the Holy Spirit to temper our tongues and help us weigh our words, we can speak in a polite tone. This doesn’t mean we don’t speak the truth. It just means we verbalize it in an honorable way.” - Karen Ehman

Have you ever stopped to think about what food is, why we eat it, and what it does to us when we eat it? The link between food and our well-being is so immediate, so profound and direct, yet most of us have no idea that how we feel is linked to what we eat, that our various complaints and conditions and moods and energy (or lack of it) are driven by the fuel we put into our body.

Because of the current weather situation we regretfully need to cancel our caroling and hay ride tomorrow evening. It's the perfect opportunity to curl up under a blanket with your family and watch your favorite Christmas movie! We will see you all on Sunday morning for worship at 9:30am & 10:45am!

Advisory: Storm tips and information from American Canyon. See email for details.

A big storm is on the way. As of now, the National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood and High WindWatch in effect beginning Wednesday at 10 PM through Friday at 10 AM. Our crews will be available 24 hours a day and likely responding throughout the storm.

City staff has been preparing for the storm by raking up leaves and clearing storm drains throughout the City. The City recently completed work at the creeks that will reduce the risk of flooding.

Prepare your home or business

Clear your gutters of leaves and place them in your yard waste bin
Clear any leaves in the drains in front of your house
Be prepared for the high winds and remove things from your yard that might fly away
Keep an eye out around your neighborhood
Self-serve sandbag stations

Available to residents and businesses at the following locations:

Corporation Yard – 205 Wetlands Edge Road; available 8 AM – 4 PM

The empty lot next to the library at 300 Crawford Way; available 24 hours

For flooding or downed trees/branches – call Public Works at 647-4550 (press 0 if calling after-hours)

For downed power lines please call 911 – do not attempt to clear the area

Drive carefully!

Roadways will often flood nearest to the roadway edges, especially on elevated roadways with walls on both sides. Avoid the outside lanes, especially at night.
Never drive through standing water. You never know how deep the water is, and what may be lurking beneath the surface.
The primary method of avoiding collisions during severe weather is to slow down. Slower speeds prevent hydroplaning, which often leads to crashes. Extra following distance will also help if someone crashes ahead.
Whenever your windshield wipers are on, your headlights should be as well. Often, vehicles are not visible without head and taillights.
Prepare your vehicle now. Replace windshield wipers if necessary; check your brakes and your fluids. The worst time to break down is during heavy weather. Towing services are usually overwhelmed with collisions, and response times are delayed.
If you experience a minor collision, please move out of the roadway as soon as possible to prevent secondary collisions and to keep traffic moving!
